Now, Neerja flies high at the box-office

Sonam Kapoor's Neerja made swift progress over the weekend. We told you how the film registered collections to the tune of Rs. 4 crore on Day One and was expected to see a surge in collections owing to its glowing reviews (Neerja makes a slow start, Feb 20). Sure enough, the Ram Madhvani-directed film raked in over Rs. 20 crore over the first weekend.

According to Kamal Gianchandani, CEO PVR Pictures, the film performed better than it was expected to. “Neerja has picked up so well that we’re assured it will make a lot of money in the days to come. It has extremely powerful word of mouth. The film will shine brightly on Sonam’s resume,” he says.

So then, do we have another Airlift in the making? Rajesh Thadani, a leading independent distributor, asserts it’s early to say that. “Neerja, which was made on a very small budget, has already recovered its cost. So, moving forward, the film should make profits and be counted as a hit,” he says.

Here’s the break-up of Neerja's weekend collections:

The collections of Loveshhuda, on the other hand, were to the tune of Rs. 2 crore.
